Iodine and Postpartum Nutrition: What to Know

Iodine is required for normal thyroid hormone production. The thyroid helps regulate many normal body processes, which is why iodine is an important nutrient — but also why “more” is not automatically better.

Why breastfeeding changes the discussion

Maternal iodine intake contributes to iodine available in breast milk. Diet, iodized salt use, dairy and seafood intake can all affect total intake. Some seaweed products can contain very high and inconsistent amounts of iodine.

Supplements need clear amounts

A postpartum supplement should clearly state the amount of iodine and its source. People with thyroid disease, those taking certain medications, or anyone advised to limit or modify iodine intake should speak with a qualified clinician before adding a supplement.

Do not self-treat thyroid symptoms

Fatigue, mood changes, hair changes and weight changes can occur postpartum for many reasons. They are not enough to diagnose a thyroid disorder or nutrient deficiency. Persistent or concerning symptoms deserve proper assessment.

Postpartum Daily will only make iodine-related claims that match the final licensed label.
