Postpartum Hair Shedding: Why It Happens and What Helps

Seeing extra hair in the shower after birth can be alarming, but postpartum shedding is common. During pregnancy, hormonal changes keep more hairs in the growth phase. After delivery, many of those hairs move into the shedding phase around the same time.

It is not usually a vitamin emergency

Normal postpartum shedding cannot always be prevented with a supplement. Hair regrowth takes time. Nutrition still matters for normal hair health, but dramatic “stop postpartum hair loss” claims oversimplify the biology.

Support the basics

Eat enough food and protein, avoid overly restrictive dieting, treat hair gently, and keep up with appropriate postpartum care. Iron deficiency, thyroid conditions and other medical issues can also affect hair, so unusually severe, patchy or prolonged loss deserves assessment.

What a supplement can responsibly say

A product may provide nutrients that contribute to normal hair or general nutritional health if the formula and authorized claims support that wording. It should not promise guaranteed regrowth.

Recovery does not follow a six-week deadline. Hair is one more example of a postpartum change that can continue for months.
